One Month of Kanpur Metro Extension to Central Station: 8 Lakh Riders, City Embraces Underground Travel

Kanpur: The extension of the Kanpur Metro passenger service to Kanpur Central Station has completed its first successful month, marking a significant shift in the city’s commuting habits. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 30, the extended route from Motijheel to Kanpur Central has already clocked an impressive 8 lakh passengers in just 30 days.

Residents flocked in large numbers to experience underground metro travel for the first time, and the metro quickly emerged as a preferred mode of daily transportation.

Stations Turn into Cultural and Community Hubs

To celebrate the service expansion, Kanpur Metro Rail Corporation turned metro stations into lively community zones. Special events such as band performances, book fairs, yoga sessions, and art competitions were organized across key metro stations including Motijheel, Kanpur Central, and Bada Chauraha.

The vibrant artwork installations inside the stations became popular selfie spots, especially among younger passengers.

As part of the ‘Show Your Talent’ initiative, local artists performed live at various underground stations every Friday. These weekly showcases will continue until July 11, offering budding talents a public platform to engage with audiences.

Customer Care and Honesty on Display

The Lost and Found Cell of Kanpur Metro proved to be highly effective and trustworthy. Over the past month, metro staff returned 10 smartphones and ₹15,000 in cash to their rightful owners. Since operations began in December 2021, the staff has reunited passengers with ₹97,000 in cash, 85 smartphones, and 5 laptops, earning public appreciation for their integrity.

A Growing Lifeline for the City

Speaking on the occasion, UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar said:

“Kanpur Metro is fast emerging as a lifeline for the city. The route connects vital education centers, hospitals, workplaces, and commercial hubs. It is not just an eco-friendly transport solution, but also a cultural and community space. We are grateful for the overwhelming support from citizens in this first month of the expanded service.”

He also noted that passengers can now book metro spaces for birthdays, anniversaries, and kitty parties at minimal charges, adding a unique social dimension to urban travel.

The first month of the expanded service has not only brought convenience but also a renewed sense of community and civic pride to Kanpur. With continued public support and innovative outreach, Kanpur Metro is poised to redefine how the city moves.
